How Many Calories in a Pound

How many calories are in a pound?  Here is the simple formula.  Once you know this you can now start to find calories in your day that you can get rid of to lose weight.

3500 calories = one pound of fat!

So, if you want to lose a pound a week, for example, then you would need to either eat less or work off 500 calories per day.

Before you panic, studies have shown that you don’t have to hit the gym or run blocks and blocks to burn off some calories. 

We have spent the last few decades trying to multi-task our days, as a result we may not move as much as we used to.  There were always magazine articles on how to squeeze in as much in a time slot as you can, or how to simplify routines and chores to save time and energy. 

Having a cute basket at the bottom of the stairs was a great place to throw things, so that eventually when you went up the stairs you only had to do it once.  You can even get baskets that are designed just for stairs and for this purpose.  But we need to do the opposite!

Laundry facilities are being put on the second floors of houses now to be right near the bedroom so that you don’t have to go so far with those dirty clothes, and now you just throw them in the dryer instead of hanging them up.


Over the years, we stopped moving as much as we used to.  I remember a building that I worked in that was four floors tall.  The elevator that was in this building was for disabled persons only and they were given a key, everyone else had to use the stairs no exceptions and with offices on other floors, you were always in the stair well.

So, now we need to get back into doing a few of these extra chores to help lose that weight and rev things up a bit.  So, take something upstairs right away.  Even if you have to do this a few times. 

Walk up those stairs when you can, and walk the dog when you get home, instead of getting a dog walker or your kids to do it, all go together. 

There are ways to fit exercise into your day with an expensive gym.  So, tweak your diet a bit (see the home page and my story), find that 500 calories if you can, and start moving when you can.  Buy a pedometer and see just how many steps you can take each day.  Compete with yourself, and you will be burning those calories off in no time.  You Can do it!
